Inside Marina City

Goldberg's Marina City Towers are pretty fascinating. Because of the corncob design of the towers, each apartment is shaped like a slice of pie, having almost no interior right angles.

Iker Gil and Andreas E.G. Larsson spent more than two years documenting the lives of residents in the towers for the project, Inside Marina City. The resulting photographs provide a behind-the-scenes look into the diverse living spaces and the people who live there.

 

Coffee

I adore coffee. Can't live without it. I drink it black which always seems to impress people for some reason. Illustrator, Christoph Niemann, chronicles the ups and downs of his relationship with coffee. Check out the full series here. His other illustrations for the New York Times are pretty brilliant too. This is one of my favorites.

A Shade of Red

Artist, Alyson Fox, captured portraits of 100 women all wearing the same shade of red lipstick in her latest project, A Shade of Red.

She writes,"My desire is for these photographs to examine the confluences between photography, posing, performance, and cosmetics ("putting your face on" as they say here in the south) in a celebratory way- as a way of engendering a community based on our uniqueness. The women in these portraits span all ages and ethnicities. Some were comfortable in front of the camera some were very ill at ease. Regardless of their motivation or hesitation, in the end, I think we were brought together by two twin desires: One, the lure of the lipstick, of the chance to become ourselves by becoming someone else, and two, the desire to connect with people and be part of something."

There is something about red lipstick that is so empowering and sexy, not to mention, classic. I have naturally rosy lips so I rarely ever wear lipstick, but on that rare occasion, I swipe on the one color I own- a bold red.

Revealing Chicago

These photos of Chicago by photographer, Terry Evans, are so stunning. The aerial photos are part of a larger project, Revealing Chicago. Visit her website to see many more amazing photographs.

"I intend to highlight issues that concern everyone in Chicago, but that is not all. I want to share the beauty of this gorgeous, complicated city. Sometimes Chicago from above reminds me of looking at virgin prairie found from waist level twenty-five years ago, when I photographed the rich interweaving intricacy of grasses. More than anything, I wanted to show the diversity and complexity of Chicago, yet I have not even come close. This is an incomplete portrait, a fraction of a second in the life of Chicago, and every picture contains more stories than the image reveals."

Marilyn 360

The newly unveiled sculpture of icon, Marilyn Monroe, in Pioneer Plaza has been causing quite a stir. Several critics fail to see the artistic merit or the Chicago relevance of the sculpture, labeling it "beyond kitschy." Tourists, however, seem to love it as evidenced by the crowd of people posing with Marilyn and gawking up her skirt. Whether you love it or hate it, it's certainly garnered a lot of attention. One of the goals of public art is to get people talking, and in that respect I think it's definitely succeeded.

Pop Chart Lab

I saw these prints from Pop Chart Lab around the blogosphere awhile back and filed them away in my wishlist folder. I make lists obsessively in an attempt to organize the chaos of my daily life so these flow charts are right up my alley. The beer flow chart is my favorite!

20x200

I'm always on the lookout for new artwork for my apartment and a great online resource is 20X200. Their philosophy can be summed up in a simple formula: (limited editions x low prices) + the internet = art for everyone. They introduce a couple new editions each week available in three or four sizes. Here are some of my current favorites. I love reading about the artists and their inspiration behind each piece.
